CHAPTER EVENTS

Golf Ball Drop

Annual golf ball drop is held in conjunction with the Alumni & Friends Golf Outing that is organized by the alumni office to raise money for UK College of Pharmacy student scholarships.  Numbered golf balls are sold to students, faculty, staff, and alumni and then dropped from a helicopter above the green.  The ball closest to the hole wins the $500 prize!

Leadership Convocation and Banquet

The UK COP holds weekly convocations which host a variety of speakers such as the College Dean, national student officers for organizations like NCPA, informational sessions led by current clinical pharmacists about possible career paths, and many more wonderful topics.  PLS Chi chapter hosts a leadership convocation, this year on October 7, 2010 where our new Dean Timothy Tracy will address the College.  We look forward to hearing from Dean Tracy what he has experienced along his career and what tips he has about how to build and develop leadership skills.  Later that night the student organization and class leaders within the College are invited to attend a la lucie (a local restaurant) where Clay Rhodes, Kentucky Pharmacists Association President, will be the keynote speaker.  This will be a fun night to hear from a current leader in Kentucky pharmacy as well as fellowship with faculty and fellow student leaders.

God's Pantry Food Drive

God's Pantry is a local food bank in Lexington that provides food for needy families.  They are especially busy around holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.  At Thanksgiving they make packages for traditional Thanksgiving meals to hand out to families.  PLS challenges the College of Pharmacy students and faculty to donate food over a 2 week period which can be given to God's Pantry a week before Thanksgiving.  Certain classes are assigned certain items and a point system is in place to keep track of the "score".  The winning class gets donuts provided by PLS after all the points are counted.

CLASS

This stands for Comprehensive Leadership Advancement Skills Seminar and was the submission to the 2009 Charles Thomas Leadership Challenge.  We did not win but felt it was important to implement this program for our first year class.  The event is held the first day back to class in the spring semester and there are several breakout sessions with topics such as: Pharmacy and Political Advocacy, Public Speaking and Networking, Leadership Styles, Innovative Pharmacy Practice Models, and Interacting with the Media.  The students can select which sessions they want to attend based on their interests.  In 2011 this will be the 2nd Annual CLASS held for the first year students and the Chi Chapter feels this is a great way to encourage our new students to step outside the box of just going to school to get a PharmD and to consider being involved with the many student organizations at the UK College of Pharmacy.
